The UW Clean Energy Institute (CEI) supports the advancement of next-generation solar energy and battery materials and devices, as well as their integration with systems and the grid. CEI creates the ideas and educates the people needed to generate those innovations, while facilitating the pathways to bring them to market. The Associate Director for Education will support CEI research programs and develop academic programs (for graduate and undergraduate students) and curricula (for grades 4-12 students). The UW Clean Energy Institute (CEI) has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director for Education. RESPONSIBILITIES: Academic Programs •Oversee the day-to-day operations of the CEI Graduate Fellowship program and welfare of the fellows, including coordinating applications for the program, assisting with recruiting, and developing programmatic content for Fellows. •Coordinate with CEI faculty and UW staff on the development of missioned-aligned ways to support student and professional education that can expand our impact through minors, Master’s degrees, certificate programs, short courses, etc. •Manage multiple REU/ALVA/RET programs. This involves: promoting the program to targeted audiences, administering the application process, recruiting lab sponsors, coordinating with service partners, and performing rigorous evaluation to ensure they meet program education, research, and diversity goals. •Maintain database of student participants, volunteer activities, special awards and tracking after graduation. •Assist in the coordination and planning of CEI’s biannual conference, ORCAS: International Conference on Energy Conversion & Storage. This includes facilitating professional development sessions and general on-site logistics. •Manage the CEI Seminar course Canvas site and track course attendance. •Curate CEI’s Cleanenergywiki.org and clean energy lesson explorer. •Serve as Education Director for a National Science Foundation (NSF) Materials Research & Engineering Center (MRSEC), UW Molecular Engineering Materials Center (MEM-C). Duties Include: •Coordinating MRSEC Annual Meeting •Administering MEM-C REU, RET, ALVA programs •Providing support for undergraduates (CURA) •Writing the education section of the NSF MRSEC annual report •Participating in national MRSEC Educational Directors meetings Outreach •Develop, assess, and improve CEI’s signature grades 4-12 outreach program that has regional and national visibility. This program sets the stage for center-level broader impacts activities, while supporting the broader mission of the UW in education, diversity, equity, and inclusion. •Set and track key performance indicators (KPI’s) to assist with assessing outreach programs. •Develop surveys and collect data from students, teachers, website visitors, and other stakeholders. •Recruit and supervise CEI Education & Training Fellow. •Coordinate management of a cohort of ~30+ active clean energy ambassadors. •Build and maintain an involved alumni network of previous CEI fellows and volunteers. •Monitor supply of outreach kits. Repair, restock, and redesign outreach kits as needed. •Recruit, train, and equip satellite Clean Energy Ambassador Partner sites. •Monitor compliance with UW Youth Safety and APS 10.13 Research Support •Assist with designing, writing proposals for, and implementing educational programs connected with external grants and contracts relevant to CEI’s mission. Networking & Advancement •Establish new connections with groups both inside and outside the UW to amplify the reach of CEI education programs. These include, student organizations, nonprofit and community oganizations, relevant research groups, and departments. •Adapt education, outreach, and research content from CEI to convey the center’s mission to university, government, industrial, and community sponsors in a way that promotes engagement. •Write, design and distribute a quarterly education newsletter to stakeholders highlighting successes and opportunities for engagement. Build listserv for newsletter with contacts from outreach events. •Work with the CEI communications team to provide content suitable for advancement and Institute communications. Other •Prepare and manage CEI education and workforce engagement budgets across multiple fund types. Utilize account codes to project and track expenditures to maintain budget limits. Maintain internal controls and ensure fiscal operations are compliant with University policies and procedures. •Prepare the CEI Education & Outreach yearly report. •Help CEI Chief Scientist manage organization’s Student and Faculty Advisory Board. •Other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: •Bachelor's degree in knowledge relevant to clean energy, such as chemistry, physics, materials science, bioengineering, chemical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental science, or related field and 3 years' experience. •Good foundational knowledge of “clean energy” research and demonstrated technical writing ability. •Experience developing and delivering educational programs and curriculum materials and/or working with students and teachers in formal and informal educational settings. •Ability to collect and analyze educational program measurements and produce yearly reports to funders. •Demonstrated ability to conceive, plan, and execute projects independently. •Flexibility and willingness to work under pressure of frequent deadlines and changing priorities in a high-volume academic setting. •Excellent oral and written communication skills. •Ability to exercise independent judgment and work independently to resolve problems. •High level of professionalism, organization, scrupulous attention to detail, and the ability to manage workload, and prioritize effectively. •Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED EXPERIENCE •Postgraduate degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, bioengineering, chemical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental science, education or related field. •Teaching experience across a wide range of age groups (children to adults). •Ability to lead and inspire creativity in students. •Software proficiency required to produce attractive, effective, demonstration materials and displays. •Ability to design creative and novel approaches to communicating clean energy research to lay audiences. •Experience with storyboarding, scripting, and editing video. •Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of developed programs and materials to a target audience. •Experience with WordPress, Marketo, Catalyst, Zoom, Arduino Programming Language, Mediawiki, and Google Forms.
