We are seeking a full-time, 10-month, middle school science teacher for the 2020-2021 school year. This position includes 5 weekly classes of science for 5th grade, 6th grade, 2 sections of 7th grade, and 8th grade for a total of 25 classes per week. Class periods are 45 minutes in length. 5th and 6th-grade science classes cover general sciences to include elements of biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science. The 7th grade focuses on life science and takes an annual field trip to Wallops Island to study ecology. The 8th-grade curriculum examines physical science.
The candidate will be able to plan and provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences for middle school students that are conducive to their intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development. The applicant must be skilled in classroom differentiation and be able to select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Must monitor and evaluate student outcomes through a variety of assessment techniques, maintain appropriate records, and follow required procedures and practices. The candidate must be a strong communicator, both orally and in writing, and be able to interact effectively with adolescent students, parents, staff, and community. The candidate must also participate fully in the life of the school, in terms of curricular work, faculty meetings, and in community activities and functions.
Thoroughly understands curriculum and best instructional practices
for teaching general science
Can effectively design and implement science units for middle school students
Uses a variety of teaching strategies, effective lesson planning, and classroom management techniques
Is able to plan, deliver, and develop cross-curricular units of instruction where appropriate
Competently infuses technology into the science curriculum
Skilled in working collaboratively with fellow faculty members
Knowledge, Skills, and General Abilities:
Philosophically aligned with the mission of the school
Proficient with Google Docs, Google Apps for Education, Microsoft Word, e-mail, internet searches, and social media
