The eScience Institute has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Technical Education Specialist. The mission of the eScience Institute at the University of Washington is to engage researchers across disciplines in developing and applying advanced computational methods and tools to real world problems in data-driven research. The eScience Institute engages in research and training programs of a variety of durations across an array of subjects with the aim of advocating for and spreading proficiency in the methods and tools of data-driven research. This, in turn, supports and grows the impact of data science across engineering and scientific disciplines. Certain methods and tools are generically applicable to many research domains due to common patterns in compute implementation. From astronomy to zoology, scientists from all fields need to organize, clean, analyze and otherwise manage data. They need to appropriate and manage computing resources. They need to publish findings and collaborate with other researchers. And they need to work with, and frequently develop, software. The Technical Education Specialist (TES) will work collaboratively to sustain the eScience Institute as a primary data science educational resource at the UW, serving faculty, students, researchers, and staff spanning all schools and departments including medicine. The TES work profile will be driven by grant-scale projects and sub-projects therein concerned with educating researchers spanning a diversity of domains from neuroscience to astronomy to computer science to oceanography to molecular engineering to epidemiology. These educational responsibilities will center on thematic methods and corresponding technologies in research computing. The TES will therefore need considerable technical depth to work with persons from these different domains and contexts, adaptively managing project execution. The TES will create and manage delivery of technical content for eScience educational programs and services, organize and lead training events that teach essential research computing skills, and keep pace with developing tools and technologies for data-driven research. The TES will communicate project status and issues affecting progress to senior management, project sponsors and project teams. In view of the eScience Institute’s expanding leadership role in the global academic community and planned growth in outreach staffing we anticipate that the TES responsibilities will include both supervisory work within eScience and collaboration and coordination with other universities and academic institutions. The TES will contribute to the Institute’s growing opportunities for training and outreach, centered on thematic methods and corresponding technologies in research computing. The TES will manage and deliver services for new and existing programs, regularly performing professional level program administration and management of a non-routine nature. Examples of existing programs include the following: •Hackweeks and Incubators - The eScience Institute engages in hack weeks and incubators that last from one to ten weeks per engagement. These outreach events include opportunities to teach research computing skills to participating scientists and students. •CloudBank - A joint effort between UCSD, UW and UCB; funded by the National Science Foundation Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) directorate with the purpose of supporting all aspects of research computing on a public cloud platform (AWS, GCP, Azure). Researchers will depend on CloudBank to provision and manage a cloud computing account, track and minimize spending, and learn to navigate the relatively new terrain of the commercial/public cloud as a research computing platform. •Pangeo - A joint effort across multiple universities and private organizations to build communities around an open source / data / infrastructure framework for computation in the geosciences and beyond. Constituent technologies including the public cloud are harmonized and taught: To students, postdocs, faculty and staff engaged in data-intensive research. •Regional Cabled - Array The University of Washington School of Oceanography has driven the installation and maintenance of a cabled undersea observatory -- the Regional Cabled Array (RCA) -- extending 300 miles off the coast of Oregon as far as the active volcano known as Axial Seamount. The observatory powers a wide variety of undersea instruments that generate continuous streams of data that are brought back on-shore in real time. There are numerous associated education, outreach, and training challenges concerned with the dissemination of these data streams to scientists, students and the public. The TES will directly report to the Cloud Director, and will also be accountable to eScience Institute executive leadership. The TES will exercise substantial responsibility to drive program success, utilizing independent judgment and decision-making to manage and deliver services. The TES will ensure compliance with institutional and department policies and regulations. RESPONSIBILITIES: Educational Content and Information Management •Exercises substantial responsibility to ensure program success; responsible for identifying and tracking evaluation metrics to improve content and delivery. •Develop and create written and multi-media technical learning content •Organize and manage online learning resources for ease of access by community members. •The successful candidate for this position should demonstrate teaching acumen and initiative for information management responsibilities. They will use specialized knowledge to organize and manage project-specific, highly technical information in a prioritized hierarchy. Stated in terms of optimization: What material is needed by the target community? What exists? How can existing resources be referenced effectively? What is missing and how do we go about creating it? Consultation and Instruction •Teach and consult in person and remotely on computing resources to support data-driven research. Teaching activities will include live teaching sessions with individuals, small groups, and occasional larger classes. •Collaborate with research teams to develop learning paths and establish long and short-term goals. •Evaluate and contribute to technical education advocacy language in project proposals. •Initiate new projects and contribute to existing opportunities at eScience for education, outreach and training. •Communicate with leaders regarding outstanding issues and develop innovative solutions Knowledge, Tool, and Technology Development •Maintain currency on research computing infrastructure, particularly on the public cloud; apply learning to education, consultation, and instruction services. •Attend conferences and off-site meetings; some travel will be necessary in this job. •Responsibility for compliance with UW policy REQUIREMENTS: •Master’s degree in STEM or related field, and at least 4 years of related experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for this degree. •Scientific experience that includes publishing original data-driven research. •Experience in technical writing and in teaching technical subject matter to a variety of audiences. Communication and teaching skills will be put to daily use under a variety of circumstances and across a range of subjects. A typical job task might be teaching scientists how to publish, access and share large tabular datasets for collaborative research. •Ability to understand and exegete complex research computing ecosystems. This ability must be accompanied by corresponding computer skills in both research programming and in communications contexts, for example Linux/Python and G-Suite respectively. Other important examples of research computing technologies relevant to this position include Jupyter notebooks, Kubernetes and Apache Spark. •Must be self-motivated and demonstrate both intellectual curiosity and a strong commitment to the mission of the eScience Institute and the University. •Ability to quickly learn and use new software packages effectively. •Ability to quickly learn new tools and technologies through on-the-job training, and integrate them into the TES’ portfolio. •Effective communications: Express oneself clearly and empathetically in interactions with others in all forms of communication, verbal and written, one-on-one and group, etc. •Handle multiple projects simultaneously and be able to handle the demands of multiple communities with different characteristics, interacting both remotely and in person. •Ability to work independently as well as in team settings, interact with diverse technical communities around the world. •Ability to take on project management tasks. •Familiarity with at least one public cloud platform such as the Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure. •Familiarity with science and technology topics and ability to translate complex concepts to appeal to a variety of audiences. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
