Job Summary: Conducts tests and procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records observations and measurements and collects and compiles data in a research lab; requires a practical understanding of a limited number of standard scientific techniques. Position ideally suited for a recent graduate looking to gain more experience prior to applying to graduate or medical school. The position will allow the individual to gain experience in cutting-edge imaging and single-cell technologies. Assists in the design and execution of microbiology, molecular biology and microscopy experiments in support of the labs overall research goals. Conducts data analysis. Performs routine lab tasks including but not limited to: ordering, restocking, organizing, preparing reagents, solutions, media. Conducts tests and procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records observations and measurements and collects and compiles data in a research lab; requires a practical understanding of a limited number of standard scientific techniques.
Working Conditions: This is a one-year grant funded appointment subject to renewal based on funding.
Principal Accountabilities Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices and conducts standard and repetitive experiments and completes basic trouble-shooting techniques. Sets-up, operates and maintains standard lab equipment. Using an entry level of skill, completes the following activities (please highlight):
DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, Western blotting
Cloning, mapping and sequencing of DNA
Recombinant virus production and purification
NGS library preparation
Cell culture, cell isolation
Lentiviral infection of mammalian cells
Generating CRISPR modified mammalian cells
Infecting mammalian cells with bacteria
Database management of colony
Other (please specify):
Data analysis – automated image analysis and data visualization using Python
Completes standard and routine clerical duties such as copying, filing, data entry, word processing, etc.
Maintains inventory of reagents, mice and lab supplies
Completes other duties as assigned
High school diploma or equivalent and some basic science courses is required.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Undergraduate degree in Biology, Bioengineering or related discipline.
Previous research experience in an academic lab environment (at least one full-time summer research experience)
Experience with routine molecular biology techniques
Basic microbial culture
Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented
Good computer skills including an ability to use Microsoft Excel for data entry and analysis
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Demonstrated lab experience in mammalian cell culture and lentivirus generation
Experience with molecular cloning (Gibson, Golden gate, PCR etc)
Basic microscopy experience
