MUSC Health, the health system component of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), is seeking a dynamic, distinguished clinical academic leader to serve as its Academic Integration Officer [AIO]. In this critical leadership role, the AIO must utilize outstanding leadership skills to navigate a large and complex clinical, teaching, and research enterprise. The AIO will provide guidance for developing and managing financial and capital budgets related to the academic matters of the health system. The AIO is a key role in integrating the academic functions of the University with the health system. This individual will be expected to be an academic champion within the health care delivery system, act to optimize the connectivity and collaborative interface between the health system and our core academic enterprise, and collaborate with the Provost and the VPR
The AIO matrix reports in a solid line to the MUSC Health Chief Physician Executive, and a dotted line relationship with the MUSC Provost.
Minimum Training and Education:
MD or DO or other advanced graduate degree with significant clinical experience
At least ten years of progressive experience within an academic health system in a multi-program institution and experience in a leadership role preferred.
Experience with and knowledge of academic health systems, graduate medical education, and health sciences education in general preferred.
Ability to effectively build, positive, constructive relationships with individuals across all health professions disciplines and at all levels of the enterprise.
Demonstrated past leadership accomplishments and expertise in decision making and analytic skills.
Assertive and encouraging communication style—motivates and inspires others to achieve mutually beneficial relationships and the highest performance standards. Diplomatic while being decisive.
Effective team builder and very skilled in developing effective relationships with multiple constituencies, including medical staff, employees, state and community leaders and other organizations.
Licensed by South Carolina Medical Board or Appropriate Board Certification for other professional associations.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as the academic champion at the executive level of decision making for the health system to ensure that the university’s academic interests are considered and appropriately prioritized in all major decisions.
Function as the primary MUSCH liaison for all senior university officials in addressing academic priorities as they relate to the health system. At the discretion of the Provost, may be invited to attend University meetings related to MUSC academic affairs.
Collaborating with the appropriate University leaders, including the Dean of the COM and Senior Associate Dean for GME in the College of Medicine, the AIO will lead the expansion of regional GME education in SC and help form academic consortia associated with health systems across South Carolina
In this role, this individual will work collaboratively with the Office of the Provost and the VPR to enhance the academic mission of MUSC Health related to its Regional Health Network and affiliates including oversight of regional graduate medical education consortia, the academic affiliation agreements with other appropriate health systems and organizations, and continuing medical education supported by the health system.
Set the strategic academic vision for MUSC Health in partnership with administrative leadership across the enterprise, and share responsibility for insuring compliance with regulations and regulatory bodies pertaining to the academic mission for MUSC Health
As designated by the Provost, represent MUSC Health regarding academic programs with other entities.
Enhance the academic mission of MUSC Health in a competitive environment
Transmittance of a clear vision for advancing the academic mission of MUSC Health in the midst of a changing healthcare and education landscape
Collaborate and coordinate with key academic leaders across the University and insure there is good working relationship between the University and health system in all academic functions.
Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing 20 lbs (+/-) unassisted. Lift from 36” to overhead 15 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
