Joint Faculty Position in Catholic Studies and Classical Studies
The University of Mary invites applications for a joint faculty position in Catholic Studies and Classical Studies to begin in the summer 2021 semester. Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and rank. Rank and area of specialization are open. Candidates who demonstrate the ability to teach both Catholic Studies and Classical Studies, do interdisciplinary work within the Liberal Arts, and engage the broader Catholic intellectual tradition are desired.
This joint appointment involves commitment to the Catholic Studies Program at the University of Mary, a vibrant and apostolic program seeking the education of the whole of a student’s life through community involvement, individual mentoring, and a dedication to passing on the Catholic intellectual tradition. The Catholic Studies Program is an exciting interdisciplinary program that examines the Catholic Church’s contributions to human thought and culture, in which students study a wide range of fields from a Catholic perspective, including theology, history, economics and business, spiritual writings, art, philosophy, health care, architecture, political thought, the sciences, education, and literature. Duties of the Catholic Studies appointment involve teaching broadly and being involved outside the classroom in the activities and events of the Catholic Studies undergraduate and graduate programs. This joint appointment also entails commitment to and leadership of the Classical Studies Program at the University of Mary, a program dedicated to teaching the classical languages, history, culture, and philosophy of ancient Rome and Greece, as well as communicating the continued relevance of this ancient legacy to the contemporary world. The Classical Studies appointment further entails organizing, running, marketing, and teaching a Summer Latin Institute, with the goal to start in the summer of 2021. The Summer Latin Institute will offer introductory courses in Latin that emphasize the syntax, forms, and vocabulary of classical and ecclesiastical Latin, and intermediate courses in Latin that are designed to transition from the introductory material offered in first year Latin to the next level with the reading of Latin authors, including the Church Fathers.
Applicants must excel in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, demonstrate evidence of supporting student formation outside of the classroom, and have an active research agenda. The successful candidate is expected to understand, support, and advance the Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine mission and identity of the University of Mary and the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities (see www.umary.edu/about/mission/missionidentity.php).
Required qualifications include:
Ph.D. or equivalent degree
Must excel in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level and be able to teach broadly in the Liberal Arts, while also having an active research agenda.
Must demonstrate proficiency in the Latin and Greek languages.
Has experience teaching Latin and Greek.
Possesses some background and familiarity reading and teaching classic works of antiquity and of the Church Fathers.
Upholds and promotes the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary
Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Mary and throughout the university in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ
