Ojai Valley School is a pre-kindergarten to grade 12 boarding and day school located on two campuses in Ojai, California. The Lower Campus serves students in grades PK-8 and the Upper Campus serves students in grades 9-12.
Summary of Position
The Middle School Science Teacher, under the supervision of the Head of School, Lower Campus, is responsible for maintaining, creating and implementing curriculum for the 7th and 8th grade. The ideal candidate is a dynamic, creative, science teacher who possesses an enthusiasm for working with middle school students, a commitment to innovative pedagogy and collaboration with colleagues, excellent writing and communication skills, and comfort and familiarity with the use of relevant technology to enhance learning. The ideal candidate will be an experienced teacher capable of teaching various levels of middle school science.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Create and deliver rigorous, effective, and compelling curricular experiences
Work to ensure academic excellence (the ability of students to approach novel tasks with the confidence, mindset, and skills to accomplish them successfully)
Collaborate with the grade-level teams and science department to support co-curricular programming and the development of adolescents beyond the classroom
Keep careful anecdotal and assessment records to inform and write comprehensive student reports
Lead and assist in parent-teacher conferences focused on the social, emotional, and academic growth of middle school students
Record curriculum in the school-wide database
Provide regular, constructive, and specific feedback to students to encourage their growth and improvement as scientists and innovators
Commit to fostering a diverse and inclusive community in and out of the classroom
Engage with students routinely by providing coverage at lunch, recess, and dismissal, or other duties as needed
Perform additional responsibilities as required

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; prior teaching experience required. Credential and experience with curriculum planning is preferred.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate grades, and possesses basic skills to work with budgets.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Current CPR and First Aid preferred.
California Driver's License preferred.
