The Department of Animal Science's mission is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals and to apply this knowledge to benefit society. Our department is devoted to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension, and outreach.

What You Will Do

We are seeking a talented individual who will lead the development of an outward-facing extension communications program in Animal Science, geared at providing information to students, direct stakeholders, and the public through popular press web and print articles, podcasts, and radio programs.

The overall goal is to increase awareness of food animal production and build stronger relationships with the Department of Animal Science, Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4H educators, students, farmers, nutritionists, policymakers, and non-farming neighbors that benefit from agricultural food production and protection of the environment.

Specific duties include:

• Coordinating a communications audit/assessment with each of the extension/faculty programs within the department.

• Leading the development of content (articles, podcasts series, announcements for web and social media outlets) in collaboration with faculty in the department and students.

• Working with and supervising Cornell undergraduate students and high school students enrolled in 4-H programs to develop social media content.

• Ensuring placement of articles and other content within newspapers and magazines and on the Animal Science website.

What We Need

We are looking for an individual that excels at building relationships with multiple stakeholders and has outstanding communication skills, both written and oral. We need someone who appreciates increasing awareness of food animal production and is interested in novel communication methods. We need someone that has strong customer service skills with a focus on excellence. Additionally, we need someone who has:

• Bachelor's Degree in Communications or Animal Science/Agricultural Sciences with a minor in Communications or Education and 2+ years of relevant experience in communications, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Proficient with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

• Experience with Content Management Systems like WordPress or other blog services.

• Ability to develop social media content.

• Experience with podcast development and use of podcasting software.

• Ability to communicate with diverse audiences.

• Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including public speaking.

• Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team.

• Solid organizational and time management abilities with the aptitude to track, perform and prioritize multiple projects under pressure.

• Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of students, faculty, and staff.

• Ability to develop effective working relationships with diverse groups, including, University employees, Extension and community educators and volunteers, and youth.

• Experience in mentoring or providing guidance to students.

• Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.

If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:

• 3+ years of experience in science education, communications, or related field.

• Experience with Photoshop.

• Knowledge in the societal contributions of animal agriculture and animal science.

This position is part-time (20 hours/week) and will be based in Ithaca, New York. This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
