Upper School: Design and Computer Science Educator
La Jolla Country Day School
The Innovation Lab at La Jolla Country Day School, having just completed its fifth year in existence, values its “startup atmosphere” where the entire team of seven experienced educators and industry professionals is key in redesigning the K-12 education experience. Our students have worked for industry corporations such as CamelBak, Ottobock and others, filed for patents, started businesses and won national design competitions.
Our goal is to teach our students professional level skills and development processes that are critical to adoptable innovation. By the time they graduate, students are expected to work with industry and non-profits to develop products, solutions and technology.
Position Description Are you a digital creator and computer scientist who likes to take on ambitious projects? Do you believe that students can create meaningful work before college? Do you love to mentor people and share incredible resources with them?
The Innovation Lab at La Jolla Country Day School is seeking a highly talented educator and digital developer to expand our students’ ability to create, particularly using digital tools and computer science.
Our program provides access to all of the resources an educator can need including a VR Lab, a prototyping Lab, a creative Studio space, as well as a student Venture Capital Fund for ambitious student projects. Therefore, we need an educator who is capable of helping students identify meaningful projects, teaching the skills needed to achieve ambitious goals, managing the projects, and showcasing work to the greater educational community.
We take a modern constructivist approach to education that blends concepts and theory into project-based learning experiences that allow students to create original and meaningful work. Our educators are a blended team with various expertise but who are all great coaches to students rather than sages on a stage delivering content. This is particularly important when our students of all ages connect with outside organizations and companies to transfer their knowledge to work on unique “real-world” problems.
Responsibilities The expertise that you will need to bring to the Innovation Lab at La Jolla Country Day School is in digital design and development. Your personal expertise could be in, for example, mobile app development, product design, data visualization, or another broadly computer science-related field. You should have a portfolio of example solutions that you have developed individually and as a supervisor/educator.
This is a full time position teaching, project managing and mentoring students on a variety of topics as well as collaborating with faculty, staff and community members on department and organizational projects.
