Under minimal supervision, provides an exemplary science instructional experience in the classroom for middle school students, and supports students, parents, and other community members in realizing our Guiding Principles. Abides by our Framework for Professional Standards.
Plans and teaches middle school Science curriculum
Maintains class websites
Communicates with parents
Coordinates with other teachers, specialist and administration as needed
Records grades and generates report cards and student narratives
Works with learning specialist, develops, communicates and implements Educational Accommodation Plans (EAPs) as needed to support students
Participates in Middle School Division and planning meetings
Participates in Committees as required/desired
Helps with recess and lunch duties as needed
Develops positive, collegial relations with co-workers with a regard for the dignity and social/emotional wellbeing of others and supports community decision-making processes
Vigorously engages in his/her own professional development
Establishes and cultivates community relations by maintaining open and candid dialogue with all of the school’s constituencies
Establishes and communicates to parents and students clear expectations for classroom and extra-curricular operational processes and procedures (i.e., grading/reporting procedures, attendance policies, homework and class work expectations, student behavior, etc.)
Observes laws and the school’s policies, procedures and regulations which have application to and implication for the professional’s responsibilities
Is familiar with and complies with all policies and regulations as put forth in the school’s documents
Since safety and security are everyone’s responsibility, takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, faculty, staff, equipment, materials and facilities
Participates in Elementary and Middle School Division and planning meetings
Participates in Committees as required/desired
Helps with recess and lunch duties as is needed
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Education & Experience:
A Bachelor’s Degree, with an emphasis in a science related area from a four-year college or university required
Master’s Degree in middle school education science related areas preferred
3+ years of combined teaching experience required
Experience in teaching science courses at middle school level
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Classroom management skills
Passion for science
Familiarity with current learning theories and basic principles of human growth and development and ability to consider them in the design and implementation of learning experiences
Knowledge of current trends and research in learning and assessment
Ability to manage the non-instructional human dynamics in the educational setting
Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the children and program
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to maintain confidential information
Ability to work collaboratively in team situations
Ability to work efficiently in a Microsoft Windows environment using Microsoft Office, master common automated systems for record keeping, and learn new technology
Ability to work and communicate well with all levels of faculty and staff
Ability to work and communicate well with students and their parents
Ability to work outside in all weather
Some travel required (field trips)
