Pingree School seeks an experienced science teacher to serve as our science department chair beginning with the 2021-2022 academic year. We seek educators who will build upon Pingree’s forward looking curriculum design, emphasis on the practical application of the sciences, and commitment to integrating anti-racism into coursework. The successful candidate will have a deep knowledge of and passion for science and a foundational background in two or more scientific fields to include biology, a proven record of excellence in teaching and academic leadership, and an appreciation for problem-based, student centered pedagogy that emphasizes the development of young people to be global stewards and scientific thinkers. They will be committed to and enjoy working with adolescents in all areas of school life, be open to exploring collaborative, experiential and interdisciplinary teaching opportunities, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Specific responsibilities of the science chair position include:
Oversee the science program including reviewing the curriculum regularly. Foster a focus on sustainability and environmental justice across all science disciplines and integrate equity, inclusion, and anti-racism explicitly into the program. Implement new initiatives when appropriate.
Share in and support the science department’s commitment to moving beyond the Advanced Placement curriculum and towards the development of independent advanced science courses and furthering the school’s focus on integrated studies and project based learning.
Supervise members of the department and help support their ongoing professional development and growth including observing them regularly, facilitating their evaluations, providing feedback, and serving as their advocate.
Work with the associate head of school to manage sectioning and determine teacher assignments.
Hold regular department meetings, review and amend department policies, oversee the placement of students, manage the departmental budget, assign sections and other duties to members of the department.
Support, train, and oversee the department’s safety protocols, plan adherence to Pingree’s chemical hygiene plan, and maintain the department’s chemical inventory.
Work with members of the department to update and stay current with advances in science lab equipment, technology, and safety measures.
Meet with and counsel students and parents/guardians regarding course sequencing and placement when appropriate.
Sit on the curriculum and department chair committees.
Collaborate with the associate head of school and the hiring team on the hiring of science department faculty.
Serve as an ambassador for the school by effectively and proactively communicating the value of the science program.
Manage the department budget.
The chair is expected to teach three sections, lead one co-curricular or equivalent activity, and serve as an advisor. The science department chair is supervised by the associate head of school.
