Concord Academy, an independent college preparatory school for grades 9 through 12 located in Concord, Massachusetts, anticipates an opening for a three-quarters or full-time physics teacher in its Science Department, to begin July 1, 2021. Chartered in 1922, the school currently enrolls approximately 400 boarding and day students from ten countries and territories and fifteen states.
Students are engaged in a community animated by a love of learning, enriched by a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives, and guided by a covenant of common trust. Students and teachers work together as a community of learners dedicated to intellectual rigor and creative endeavor. In a caring and challenging atmosphere, students discover and develop talents as scholars, artists, musicians, and athletes and are encouraged to find their voices. The school is committed to embracing and broadening the diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and talents of its people. Common trust challenges students to balance individual freedom with responsibility and service to a larger community. Such learning prepares students for lives as committed citizens.
We actively seek applicants who reflect and support our mission-driven commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse and equitable school community. The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience with inclusive teaching practices and a commitment to advancing the core tenets of the school’s mission.
Concord Academy Mission Statement
We are a community animated by love of learning,
diverse and striving for equity,
with common trust as our foundation.
Honoring each individual, we challenge and expand
our understanding of ourselves and the world
through purposeful collaboration and creative engagement.
We cultivate empathy, integrity, and responsibility
to build a more just and sustainable future.
The school seeks to appoint an experienced teacher in support of a strong and well-established science program. The successful candidate will value and seek out opportunities to collaborate with colleagues, bring a creative, innovative interest in curriculum design and experimentation, and enjoy working with adolescents and supporting them in acquiring and achieving a high level of interest and mastery in scientific skills and critical thinking. They should have a genuine curiosity about learning, a commitment to professional and personal growth, and experience supporting students from groups underrepresented in STEM fields to become skilled and confident physics learners. The new CA Labs building completed in 2016 offers additional opportunities to rethink current practices and experiment with innovative teaching.
We are in search of a science teacher with the capacity and interest to teach physics at both the introductory and advanced levels, and the disciplinary expertise to develop rigorous and compelling semester electives. The position could potentially include teaching an engineering or other upperclassmen elective if the candidate has the interest. Familiarity with inquiry-based methods is
important, as is an affinity towards the application of subject matter to real world problems. Applicants should have significant coursework in a relevant subject—a master’s degree is preferred, but not required.
The school anticipates being open for in-person learning for the school year 2021-2022 and may need its faculty to be willing and able to adapt to remote or Hyflex (some students in the classroom and some remote) conditions.
The school provides a competitive benefits package, and salary is commensurate with experience. All faculty members at Concord Academy participate fully in the life of the School; responsibilities include advising, serving on committees and/or clubs, and periodically providing an adult presence at school events. Coaching an athletic team is welcomed but not required and is remunerated separately. On-campus housing may be available, but it is limited, and faculty members are not required to live at the school.
