Friends seeks a Science Teacher who possesses a deep understanding of child development and progressive pedagogy, appreciation for the importance of practicing mindfulness and actively teaching social & emotional skills, and a commitment to diversity social justice & service learning and a demonstration of cultural competency. The Science Teacher reports to the Elementary/Middle School Division Head and is a member of the Elementary/Middle School team. The Science Teacher should have knowledge of inquiry-based and project-based learning.
Summary: The Teacher at Friends School is responsible for working with the teachers and students in fourth through eight grade. They are responsible for the science instruction of the children, developing curriculum, and fostering experiential learning. In addition, they care for and maintain the science equipment and lab spaces. The Science Teacher is responsible for cultivating a community of learners in the classroom who respect and care for one another. The Science Teacher works collaboratively with the classroom and specialist teachers and administrators, and participates fully in the life of the school.
Responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Maintain congruence between the school’s mission and all activities.
Promote and advance the cognitive, emotional, social and physical well-being of all students.
Stay current with research related to child development, mindfulness-based Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), innovation, and progressive pedagogy.
Develop, implement and document science curricula that puts the above research into practice and challenges each student to realize their full potential.
Support student learning through community connections, including but not limited to: inviting speakers to visit or planning and attending day or overnight trips.
Support in educating parents about the Friends School values and science program through all correspondence and parent educational events.
Maintain the classroom, common spaces and outdoor environment and materials attractively and in support of learning.
Purchasing science equipment for the program, maintaining the science materials and collaborating with the science department to manage the science budget. ?
Preserve and participate in school traditions and rituals.
Cover classes or responsibilities during absences of other teachers as appropriate.
Participate in regular meetings to address routine matters and stimulate an exchange of educational and philosophically aligned ideas.
Assist in evening and weekend events as appropriate/necessary.
Set classroom and personal yearly goals with the appropriate Division Head(s) and seek out and participate in staff development opportunities.
Comply with the Guiding Principles for Teacher Evaluation.

Salary Range: Salary range for this 50% position is $15,000-$32,500 and pay is commensurate with experience, degree, and position. Friends School offers a competitive compensation package including a 403b plan and paid leave.
