Maimonides School, an Orthodox Jewish day school in Brookline, MA, seeks an energetic and experienced individual to teach 3rd through 5th grade science in our Elementary School. In addition to science teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will offer math enrichment sessions to small groups of students in the same grades once per week. This is a .8 FTE, four days/week position with full benefits.
The school is looking for a dynamic, creative teacher with demonstrated enthusiasm for developing young learners’ academic and critical thinking skills while nurturing their social, emotional, and spiritual growth; interest and experience in curriculum development; and a commitment to innovative pedagogy. Candidates should have an educational background in a range of sciences, and preferably some background or experience in STEM. Experience with use of a Maker Space is ideal but not essential, as training will be provided.
Responsibilities for this .8 FTE position will include teaching science to grades 3-5 twice per week, plus four math enrichment pull-out classes to the same grades. The focus of science teaching in our Elementary School is on interactive, experiential, and joyful learning that connects to a young learner’s natural curiosity about the way the physical world works. Across the school, we emphasize hands-on inquiry, questioning and proposing solutions, conducting research and analysis of student findings.
Maimonides’ commitment to our families requires significant written and oral communication about student work and progress. Our commitment to our students often requires individualized attention outside of the classroom. As we are committed to vertical integration of curriculum, coordination with Middle School science teachers is expected.
Candidates should have a minimum of two years’ Elementary or Middle School science teaching experience; a wide-ranging background in science; and a commitment to work as part of a collaborative team that prepares students with the skills, critical thinking abilities, and content knowledge to succeed as they develop as learners and progress in their learning. A Master’s degree is preferred.
The employee is required to sit, talk, hear, and visually interact with staff, students, parents, and visitors. Daily desk work includes telephone and computer time; both close and distance vision is required. Frequent walking both inside campus buildings and outdoors throughout campus; navigation of stairs as a part of daily routines; and the ability to lift up to 30 lbs., when necessary.
Competitive salary and benefits are commensurate with years of experience and highest degree. Maimonides School is an equal opportunity employer committed to hiring a diverse workforce and sustaining an inclusive culture.
