Westtown School is seeking a dynamic Lower School Science Teacher beginning August 2021. Position Description: The successful candidate will have a history of igniting a love of science in children and be able to turn a knowledge of life science, physical science, earth and space sciences, engineering and technology into an inquiry-based curriculum. We seek a science teacher who is both innovative and self-directed in designing and implementing engaging and forward thinking curriculum, and someone who will meaningfully collaborate with fellow Lower School faculty, specifically around STEAM projects.
The Lower School Science Teacher will:
Provide progressive instruction for 2nd-5th grade students in lessons and hands-on learning activities that promote problem-solving, creative thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills while encouraging risk-taking in learning;
Actively engage students in the classroom through individual and group work, project-based learning, exploration, questioning, discussion, and other cooperative teaching techniques;
Integrate technology with intention into teaching strategies and practices;
Co-manage the Lower School iLab - our Design Thinking and tinkering space;
Contribute to building and sustaining an inclusive community and a science program which reflects diverse cultures and perspectives; and
Collaborate with science teachers across divisions to ensure a coherent three-divisional science education for our students.
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
A minimum of 3 years experience teaching science to lower school students
Experience with and commitment to working with lower school students, including an understanding of their unique developmental, social, and academic needs
Demonstrated growth and commitment to anti-bias anti-racist practices in education
Familiarity with integrating Google Workspace for Education into teaching practices; experience with robotics and aspects of computer science a plus
Experience with creative problem-solving frameworks (e.g., Design Thinking, Project Zero) and/or backwards design curriculum development is a plus
A collaborative spirit and the ability to connect meaningfully with colleagues and students throughout our community;
