Detailed Job Description This is a 12-month, visiting research assistant professor , non-tenure track, with an initial appointment period of three years, at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). This position reports to the Director of the SPaCE(Sensory, Perceptual, and Cognitive Ecology Center) center. The individual hired will be responsible for conducting and disseminating research into the educational experiences and practices of deaf and hard-of-hearing learners at both the K-12 and higher education levels. The person hired will develop their own line of quantitative or qualitative research that contributes to our understanding of how diversity within the DHH(deaf/hard of hearing) student body and their prior educational and social experiences impacts ongoing learning and cognitive function.
Seek external funding related to DHH in K-12 or post-secondary levels and implement funded projects that supports NTID's secondary mission. Such proposal development and implementation responsibilities may take place in a context of collaboration with the aforementioned internal and external collaborative partners.
Conduct and disseminate research into the educational experiences of DHH K-12 or post-secondary learners.
Secure funding to support research and development programs sufficient in magnitude to cover a majority of the salary and benefits expenses of the post, making such progress as stipulated in an annual Plan of Work.
Oversee external funding including budget expenditures and hiring, training, and supervision of professional staff and students working on grant-related duties.
Produce and submit relevant manuscripts to peer-reviewed publications on a regular basis.
Educate local, state and national community stakeholders and provide ongoing consultation regarding DHH K-12 and post-secondary experiences.
Provide mentoring to DHH students pursuing research activities at NTID or RIT.
Travel locally and nationally as needed for research collaborations, dissemination of research findings and to fulfill the listed key activities.
Participate in local, regional, and/or national professional organizations as appropriate.
Participate in such duties and responsibilities as are deemed necessary by the Director of SPaCE.
Research activities: grant writing, conducting research, manuscript writing, and conference presentations
Other duties as assigned (possibly tutoring or teaching)
Required Minimum Qualifications
Advanced degree: MD or PhD in Public Health, Psychology, Health Sciences, Education, or related fields.
1+ years of post-doctoral training or job experience in biomedical and behavioral science research, including having presented at professional health-related conferences, written or collaborated in grant writing, and produced research-related manuscripts.
Must be fluent in American Sign Language and able to communicate directly with DHH research participants who have various degrees of sign language ability.
