Under the direction of the Director, Makerspace lab, this position will develop, lead, promote, and assess co-curricular design learning in the MakerSpace. This position will supervise and lead outreach and connections to local industry experts and local technology and design companies to host new workshops and create new opportunities for NYU students to learn about job opportunities and relevant skills. This position serves as external ambassador for the space to the local technology and design community. This position will also serve as a design and technical mentor to students in the space. Lead 2+ workshops per semester and assist the Director in developing assessment tools and conducting research on peer led learning. Make recommendations for process improvements and research new ways to grow the innovation and design expertise of students and the MakerSpace. Work with Director to generate educational training for students, including peer mentoring system. Supervise and lead creation of digital/virtual workshops, curate the NYU MakerSpace Stream account, assist with creation and improvement of training videos and hybrid training system. Supervise approximately 10 students per semester in development of all materials and preparation necessary for workshops and events, including flyers and other promotional tools, social media, bi-weekly newsletter, event sign ups, the MakerSpace reservation tracking, ordering and managing workshop supplies and budget, and any food. Also, responsible for supervision of the development of the MakerSpace website and blog content. Lead and organize content for annual Design Week. This position will serve as the project manager for MakerSpace sustainability design projects and supervise the plastic recycling system. In addition, the Design Lab Manager will supervise undergraduate sustainability ambassadors each semester to grow sustainability focused workshops and projects. This position will mentor design teams and clubs focused on these initiatives or related topics such as students in the Design for America club or students competing in external design competitions. This position is 20% remote with 4 days per week onsite in the MakerSpace.
Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering, computer science, design, or closely related field
Preferred Education: Master's degree engineering, computer science, education, or related field
Required Experience: 3+ years Experience working in a Makerspace, Innovation Lab, or other design focused workspace
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Design software such as Adobe CC; experience with light prototyping tools and materials; programming experience; web development and WordPress; design thinking; project management experience; teaching or mentoring experience.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Raspberry Pi, Arduino or other microcontroller systems, 3D scanning, digital design and modeling software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Rhino, etc), or related DIY/makerspace technologies.
