The purpose of this role is to oversee all events/programs conducted by the department.
Reporting to the Assistance Vice Chancellor Medical Advancement, the Senior Director of Advancement, Medical Alumni manages and executes the major gift fundraising efforts for alumni and house staff affiliated with the School of Medicine at Washington University. The Senior Director will help develop and grow a dynamic multi-dimensional major gifts program through strategic moves management and pipeline development.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as the leader of the SOM Alumni major gifts program with roles and responsibilities including, and not limited to, the following:
Supervise the Senior Associate Director Medical Advancement and Administrative Assistant.
Manage and mentor senior associate directors, including establishing specific goals, metrics and objectives; evaluate performance weekly and through annual reviews.
Develop and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects of alumni and former house staff major gift prospects and donors in St. Louis and other regions of the country at $100,000 and above. Focus on fundraising opportunities for scholarship support and as other identified priorities for the school of medicine, including research, endowed professorships.
Create compelling and inspiring opportunities to further engage prospective donors in understanding the importance and impact of philanthropic support.
Enhance the moves management system that's in place to keep major gift officers accountable for fundraising activities and to continuously review portfolios to ensure that top prospects are staged appropriately.
Partner with leaders from Medical Annual Giving, Alumni Relations, and Stewardship/Donor Relations to ensure a comprehensive and strategic approach is being coordinated to engage, inspire, and promote giving amongst alumni and house staff.
Serve as a lead Medical liaison to all fundraising units within University Advancement (Regional Programs and Planned Giving) with roles and responsibilities including, and not limited to, the following:
Assign Medical Alumni major gift staff to serve as "subject matter experts" and partner with fundraisers outside of Medical Advancement that work with alumni and former house staff.
Oversee and monitor solicitations plans (Planned, Under Consideration, and Closed)that are being handled by major gift officers outside of Medical Advancement.
Create and implement a system to share pertinent information about the School of Medicine to all colleagues across University Advancement.
Serve on the Assistant Vice Chancellor's Senior Team and will be assigned to School of Medicine's and University Advancement's committees when appropriate.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Base pay commensurate with experience.
Master's degree or terminal degree.
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
Seven years of fundraising experience, preferably in higher education, a health care field and/or a record of demonstrated achievement in a field requiring the application of similar skills.
Superior fundraising record.
Highly successful and experienced professional with thorough knowledge of institutional development, particularly higher education and/or medicine.
Ability to supervise and direct professional and administrative staff members.
Ability to articulate the needs, interests, and accomplishments of the School of Medicine to a wide range of audiences.
Capacity to perform in an intellectually rigorous and complex environment.
Exhibit personal characteristics enabling effective interaction with important constituencies.
Possess a genuine curiosity and commitment to the advancement of science and science education and to the principles governing the Medical Advancement.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct development programs requiring a high degree of coordination and cooperation with other staff.
Outstanding ability helping to plan, coordinate and manage development projects and campaigns.
Demonstrated expertise with personal solicitations, stewardship and gift processes.
